How to become an online notary in Iowa?

Iowa's Secretary of State publishes a dedicated remote online notarization page. That page confirms Iowa commissioned notaries may apply for separate remote authorization, but only after they complete the required training and identify compliant technology.

Official Iowa resources: Iowa Remote Online Notarization, Handbook for Iowa Notaries Public (PDF), and Iowa Notary Resources.

Hold an active Iowa notary commission first

The Secretary of State states that you must already be a commissioned Iowa notary public before you can perform remote online notarizations. Iowa notary commissions renew every three years.

Complete the approved RON training

Iowa's RON page says the notary must complete the remote online notarization course approved by the Secretary of State and submit satisfactory proof of completion with the additional application.

File the additional Iowa remote-notary application

The official page states that commissioned notaries must submit an additional application identifying the technology they intend to use. The state also publishes a list of approved remote technology providers.

Use technology built for RON, not generic video chat

Iowa expressly says that services such as Skype, Zoom, or Facebook do not satisfy the state's RON requirements. The approved software must support identity proofing, electronic signing, and storage of the session recording.
